Lonely Mom? (there is hope)

On September 21, 2011, I came to a new country, to a new city just after 2 months of losing my cousin whom I loved (and still do) so dearly, I flew 20 hours to Dallas heartbroken but excited to be reunited with my husband whom I didn’t see for 6 months. Of course, I was sad to leave my family and my friends behind, but I thought I’d be fine, I have a husband, who is my best friend, and I could talk with my family and friends over the phone, technology is so amazing after all… Well, I was so naive… We were doing good for 6 months, he was enough for me, being alone the whole day didn’t really bother me  (being an introvert definitely helped).. but then, everything started to get to me: being stuck in the apartment while Daniel was working, no car (in Texas it’s a problem), no job (my documents for green card were in the process), no friends, no family, no one really to talk to, and even though technology worked, time zones were still different…

It was always hard for me to make friends, I prefer quality over quantity, and I’m so blessed to have friends in different countries, people who I’ve been friends with for 10+ years, people who I care about and who care about me, and even though being in different time zones changed the way we communicate, it hasn’t changed the status of our friendship. But how do you make friends when you’re in a new city, when you don’t really go anywhere, when English is your second language, and you’re always self-conscious about your accent and pronunciation, and because of it you talk even less, plus, everyone has their own circle of people they hang out with?

I was kind of miserable but didn’t want to seem needy, I felt like I got it, that I could do everything on my own, and that I didn’t really need friends. Rule #1 Never underestimate the power of having a real girlfriend (even if it’s just one) by your side.

I was staying busy, blogging, learning new skills, got a puppy… still no friends, though. Then I got pregnant. Christian was born in October 2013, and when he was about 5 months old I realized that I really wanted him to have friends who he could grow up with, have play dates, birthday parties. I knew then that I had to make the first step to change the situation.. if not for me then for him.. I knew that when he goes to school, of course, he would have friends, but I didn’t want to wait till then and I also wanted to know the parents of his friends, not just on a first name basis, but to really know them, be friends with them. So I started to search different groups for moms around the city. The first group I went to was a group for nursing moms, and I met Marycarmen there, we talked briefly, and it wasn’t like we connected and hit it off right away, but I thought she was nice and our sons are practically the same age, so I asked for her phone number to meet up some time after. We didn’t return to that group again, but we became long-lasting friends. I never thought that something like this was possible, that you could go to a class full of unknown to you people just once, and find a friend :-). I’ve joined other groups as well, met a lot of moms, with the majority of women that I met I couldn’t connect, maybe because of cultural differences, maybe because they already had their group of friends and not necessarily wanted or needed a new friend, it doesn’t matter why, it’s life I can’t be friends with everyone, right? BUT to my surprise, there were also a lot of moms that were in a similar situation like mine who just wanted a friend for their child and a friend for themselves… When I saw that, I realized that I needed to make the first step not only for me and my child but for them too. I don’t want anyone to feel lost or lonely. That was one of the reasons I became a Mombassador for Dallas Moms Blog group in my area… I want to connect people and connect with people, I want to see new moms make friends, make real friends who they can share their life events with.

I’m blessed to have a group of girlfriends that I can spend time with, do monthly moms outings (because we all know moms need that), have playdates with kids, and attend family events.

Rule # 2 Don’t be afraid to make the first step, or say “hi” or ask for a phone number to connect, maybe a mom on a playground running around after her little threenager is your friend for life, maybe not, but if she is, don’t lose her and all the moments you can create together.

Save Money When Buying Furniture Online

Everything else, Lifestyle

latest-home

Ordering furniture from an online catalogue lets you spread the cost of your order so you can pay in instalments. There are other ways you can save money, too. Here are some tips on how to make bigger savings when shopping for furniture online.

1. Buy clearance items

If you don’t mind buying an item of furniture with a defect or imperfection, buying clearance items might be for you. You will be able to save money on furniture items like tables and chairs and still have your product delivered to the address of your choice. Some clearance items might be reduced in price because they have a slight scratch or mark, but are otherwise still usable. Check clearance sections of your favourite furniture websites to find out more and discover the latest deals.

2. Check out second-hand sites

Second-hand websites can be a great way to save money when shopping online. These sites list previously-owned products, such as sofas and beds, and you could make a significant saving on household furniture. It’s important to check out photos of furniture on second-hand sites before you part with your cash, and search for any defects. If the item doesn’t have photos, contact the seller for more information. Another benefit of buying furniture from these sites is that you could save money on delivery by picking up an item of furniture in person.

  1. Use a voucher code

Voucher codes are another fantastic way to save money on furniture. Vouchers run the gamut from money off your order to free delivery, so you could secure a huge saving. Don’t forget to read the terms and conditions of a promotion before you use a voucher code, though, and check whether the discount is still valid. Usually, you will be asked to enter your code when paying for your items. You’ll receive a receipt via email once you’ve completed your transaction.

  2. Spreading the cost

Good quality furniture can be very expensive and sometimes it you just don’t have that sort of money to hand. But there is great news because more and more companies are offer different payment options on furniture, from buy now pay later to pay weekly or monthly, the choice is yours. When looking at different payment options you will need to make sure you are picking the right option for you. If you would like to know some catalogues which offer furniture on finance then Latest Home is a good place to browse.

How To Make The Most Of Your Garden This Fall

Everything else

garden-fire-pit

Yes, it’s getting colder out; no, this doesn’t mean sit inside and avoid going outside. When it comes to your garden and outdoor space you can enjoy it year round. These are ways to make the most out of the space, even with a cold weather.

Switch over to winter/autumn plants. Even if it is not too cool yet, get rid of the summer pots, pans, and plants. Instead, purchase those which are meant for colder temperatures, are designed for winter gardening, and can withstand the weather changes. You can find color and variety, and you can enjoy planting, even if the weather seems to be colder than usual.

You can also enjoy the outdoor space with family and friends. Fire pits are a nice addition. They are warm, inviting, and can help maintain the warmth if you want to sit outside around with a few chairs and talk for a while. Roast marshmallows, sit with family, enjoy the company of a good book, all while keeping warm. If you are interested in purchasing a fire pit then it is a good place to look to find the best ones. Along the same lines, there are heaters/warmers you can use outside. You simply plug them in and they help radiate heat (like an indoor heater, only for outdoor use). Not only will they help keep you warm on cooler nights, but they can also help your garden and plants which can’t withstand the sub-zero temperatures as well. So they are going to serve a dual purpose for your outdoor enjoyment, even though the weather is changing and it is starting to get a bit chilly outdoors.

Sure, the weather is cooler, leaves are changing, and many people will call it quits for their garden, but this year you do not have to. There are many ways to beat the cold, enjoy the outdoors, and make the most out of the outdoor space.

This is how our typical family day looks like (if you ever wondered :-))  Here I’m posting the photos that I really like, but if you want to see the full DITL (day in the life) photo shoot click this link.

Usually, we all wake up when one of the kids wake up (around 7 am), and then we have a little party in our bed: playing, reading books, hugging, kissing and laughing a lot.

When Daniel has a day off he cooks breakfast. And no matter who makes breakfast Christian likes to watch and help.

While Daniel is cooking breakfast, I’m nursing David. And Christian just runs back and forth to make sure that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to do LOL 🙂

29 Things To Do Before I Turn 30

Everything else, Family, Lifestyle, Thoughts

29-things-to-do

I haven’t done the post like this in a really long time, and since today is the beginning of my last year of being 20s I think it’s a good time to make the list again. This day next year I’m going to be 30 and I’m terrified of this number. I don’t even know why I’m freaking out like this.  I guess I always thought that once you turn 30, that’s it, you enter the #AdultLife, like you become a woman who can’t wear short shorts and bikini anymore, who might even cut her hair short, who must use face masks and eye cream all the time, who gets her first wrinkles, and who younger generation calls Mrs. ____ . And I don’t want this. Not because I want to be childish and don’t want to grow up, I just don’t want to get old I guess. People actually consider me mature for my age, but when I turn 30, maturity will be kind of expected. Let me know if you have similar feelings? At least then I won’t feel so lonely and silly.

Nevertheless, I want to spend this year purposefully so good that it won’t be so sad to turn 30. Here is my list of 29 things to do this year: Continue reading “29 Things To Do Before I Turn 30”

My CustomInk Experience (Behind The Scenes)

Dallas, Texas, Everything else, Lifestyle, Reviews

customink

Several weeks ago I was invited to take a tour at CustomInk’s Production Facility in Flower Mound, TX, and I was seriously blown away by how they make and customize t-shirts. Behind every t-shirt and every CustomInk’s product, there is so much work involved, so many people who work behind the scenes creating a perfect t-shirt. I never really give a thought to how t-shirts are actually created, especially when it’s so easy to design and order them online, using CustomInk Design Lab with 75 000 + pieces of art to choose from (or you can create your own design). They use several methods to make their t-shirts: embroidery, digital printing, and screen printing. You have to watch the whole process for yourself, and you will also see how I screen printed my own t-shirt (it was a lot of fun and took a lot of muscle work lol) ↓:

You can order CustomInk products for ANY event in your life..big or small: wedding, reunion, graduation, vacation, for your business, sports team etc. Here are several samples:  Continue reading “My CustomInk Experience (Behind The Scenes)”

House Makeover | Before & After

Dallas, Texas, DIY/How to, Everything else, Family, Lifestyle

house-makeover-livingwithjane

I’m finally posting before and after photos of our house makeover!!

We’ve recently moved to our new house and still in the process of unpacking the boxes (can’t wait to be done with that). We bought the house in February and we fell in love with it at first glance. We love everything about it: the layout, the size of the rooms, the fact that it’s a one-story house, and it has everything we want our perfect house to have including the backyard and of course, the pool (it’s Texas for God’s sake :-)).

It’s our first family house and first time to do any kind of remodeling. We were very excited to begin the process and to choose the paint colors, tile, appliances etc. It was very fun (more fun at the beginning than at the end lol), but it was also very overwhelming at the same time…we even had to choose the color of the grout (yes, I didn’t even think there were so many options of grout colors :-)).

We made all of our choices and then I began to worry if it would look good when it was all set and done. I didn’t want to pay more just to change and redo something that I chose myself at the first place.

Even though we wanted our house to look beautiful we were also trying to make practical choices like we made an office room instead of having a formal dining room because we need an office space since I work from home, and we can always have big dinners in the kitchen area.

Here are several Before and After photos. And below you will also find a Before/After Video + the fun process of remodeling.

This is the kitchen. The kitchen cabinets are real wood, so we decided to just paint them white instead of completely changing them since the quality is really good. We changed the floors, countertops, backsplash, sink and appliances.

Me Before You | Movie Release

Everything else, Lifestyle, NEWS

Me_Before_You_(film)

COMING OUT ON JUNE 3, 2016, and I couldn’t be more excited! The movie “Me Before You” is based on the Jojo Moyes Novel that was written in 2012. I read the book last year and I talked a little about it in my “March Currently” post. I remember reading it at night while I was nursing my baby, I was tired of course but more than that I was so intrigued by what would happen next and I kept reading. I was reading the book in one breath and while I was reading I kept telling myself: “There’s gotta be a movie. Someone definitely thought about making the movie based on this book. I couldn’t be the only one to think that this book is just so great!”. And of course, I googled it and was so happy to find out that the movie was made and was coming out in summer!!

The story is about a young successful man William Traynor (actor: Sam Claflin) who enjoyed life to its fullest until one day a terrible accident happened to him and he got paralyzed. Being bound to a wheelchair is worse for him than death itself. 2 years later a young woman named Louisa Clark (actress: Emilia Clarke) is hired to be his caregiver and she is determined to prove to Will that life is worth living.  Continue reading “Me Before You | Movie Release”
