Lonely Mom? (there is hope)

On September 21, 2011, I came to a new country, to a new city just after 2 months of losing my cousin whom I loved (and still do) so dearly, I flew 20 hours to Dallas heartbroken but excited to be reunited with my husband whom I didn’t see for 6 months. Of course, I was sad to leave my family and my friends behind, but I thought I’d be fine, I have a husband, who is my best friend, and I could talk with my family and friends over the phone, technology is so amazing after all… Well, I was so naive… We were doing good for 6 months, he was enough for me, being alone the whole day didn’t really bother me  (being an introvert definitely helped).. but then, everything started to get to me: being stuck in the apartment while Daniel was working, no car (in Texas it’s a problem), no job (my documents for green card were in the process), no friends, no family, no one really to talk to, and even though technology worked, time zones were still different…

It was always hard for me to make friends, I prefer quality over quantity, and I’m so blessed to have friends in different countries, people who I’ve been friends with for 10+ years, people who I care about and who care about me, and even though being in different time zones changed the way we communicate, it hasn’t changed the status of our friendship. But how do you make friends when you’re in a new city, when you don’t really go anywhere, when English is your second language, and you’re always self-conscious about your accent and pronunciation, and because of it you talk even less, plus, everyone has their own circle of people they hang out with?

I was kind of miserable but didn’t want to seem needy, I felt like I got it, that I could do everything on my own, and that I didn’t really need friends. Rule #1 Never underestimate the power of having a real girlfriend (even if it’s just one) by your side.

I was staying busy, blogging, learning new skills, got a puppy… still no friends, though. Then I got pregnant. Christian was born in October 2013, and when he was about 5 months old I realized that I really wanted him to have friends who he could grow up with, have play dates, birthday parties. I knew then that I had to make the first step to change the situation.. if not for me then for him.. I knew that when he goes to school, of course, he would have friends, but I didn’t want to wait till then and I also wanted to know the parents of his friends, not just on a first name basis, but to really know them, be friends with them. So I started to search different groups for moms around the city. The first group I went to was a group for nursing moms, and I met Marycarmen there, we talked briefly, and it wasn’t like we connected and hit it off right away, but I thought she was nice and our sons are practically the same age, so I asked for her phone number to meet up some time after. We didn’t return to that group again, but we became long-lasting friends. I never thought that something like this was possible, that you could go to a class full of unknown to you people just once, and find a friend :-). I’ve joined other groups as well, met a lot of moms, with the majority of women that I met I couldn’t connect, maybe because of cultural differences, maybe because they already had their group of friends and not necessarily wanted or needed a new friend, it doesn’t matter why, it’s life I can’t be friends with everyone, right? BUT to my surprise, there were also a lot of moms that were in a similar situation like mine who just wanted a friend for their child and a friend for themselves… When I saw that, I realized that I needed to make the first step not only for me and my child but for them too. I don’t want anyone to feel lost or lonely. That was one of the reasons I became a Mombassador for Dallas Moms Blog group in my area… I want to connect people and connect with people, I want to see new moms make friends, make real friends who they can share their life events with.

I’m blessed to have a group of girlfriends that I can spend time with, do monthly moms outings (because we all know moms need that), have playdates with kids, and attend family events.

Rule # 2 Don’t be afraid to make the first step, or say “hi” or ask for a phone number to connect, maybe a mom on a playground running around after her little threenager is your friend for life, maybe not, but if she is, don’t lose her and all the moments you can create together.

David Turned One

Family, Happy Birthday!!!, Lifestyle, Maternity/Baby

david-bearden-livingwithjane

I am 3 months late with this post, but it’s better late than never, right?! My life has been very hectic lately (but again, when is it not?), I got my real estate license, Christian turned 3, my parents are visiting and I’m trying to spend all my time with them and the kids. But even though David turned one 3 months ago I still wanted to upload this post along with the video that I edited for him.

He’s grown so much and is already starting to talk. He knows what he wants, he is kinda stubborn, and he loves to eat!

David started to walk independently at 14.5 weeks, he swims for 8 seconds, and he loves food!!

This little boy (well, maybe not so little) loves to pet and hug Bonnie Boo, he loves watching squirrels run in our backyard, and he will never refuse food (oh, I already mentioned it LOL).

We just absolutely love and adore him <3

top-10-picnic-parks-dfw

If you know me you know that I LOVE picnics! What can be better than sitting outside, eating good food, having a conversation with great friends while your kids are running around? Today my amazing friend and awesome blogger Roselle from in_DFW blog (which is the best guide to family fun) and I decided to team up and create a list of TEN parks in DFW that are perfect for a picnic. So here they are:

top-10-picnic-parks-dfw

  1. Haggard Park

Located in the heart of Plano and is also a home of Interurban Railway museum. We especially like going there for movie nights in the park. They are free and family-friendly, you can’t beat it.

2. Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

It’s probably number 1 park for playdates for those who live in Plano area. It has everything: a playground for kids, several pavilions, hike and bike trails, plus it’s pet-friendly.

3. Hope park

The best family park hands down. Huge playground for kids different age, spray park, stocked pond, a walking trail, BBQ grill, picnic tables – pretty much everything you need for a fun family time outdoors. If you’ve never been there, you have to check it out!

4. Bob Woodruff Park

This park is located near the lake, great place for those who love fishing. It also features sand volleyball court, hike and bike trails, therapeutic swing and a playground.

Family Day In The Life

Dallas, Texas, Everything else, Family, Lifestyle, Photography

day-in-the-life-bearden

This is how our typical family day looks like (if you ever wondered :-))  Here I’m posting the photos that I really like, but if you want to see the full DITL (day in the life) photo shoot click this link.

Usually, we all wake up when one of the kids wake up (around 7 am), and then we have a little party in our bed: playing, reading books, hugging, kissing and laughing a lot.

When Daniel has a day off he cooks breakfast. And no matter who makes breakfast Christian likes to watch and help.

While Daniel is cooking breakfast, I’m nursing David. And Christian just runs back and forth to make sure that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to do LOL 🙂

4 Healthy Snacks Kids Can Make

DIY/How to, Family, Food/Recipes, Lifestyle

healthy-snacks-livingwithjane

I’m always trying to find creative ideas on how to feed my kids healthy and incorporate foods that they don’t normally eat. So here are 4 healthy snacks ideas that kids can actually make themselves. Have you noticed that when you cook something it tastes better than if someone else cooked it (only if that someone else is not Gordon Ramsey)? The same with kids, when they help to make something they will mostly likely enjoy eating it more.

29 Things To Do Before I Turn 30

Everything else, Family, Lifestyle, Thoughts

29-things-to-do

I haven’t done the post like this in a really long time, and since today is the beginning of my last year of being 20s I think it’s a good time to make the list again. This day next year I’m going to be 30 and I’m terrified of this number. I don’t even know why I’m freaking out like this.  I guess I always thought that once you turn 30, that’s it, you enter the #AdultLife, like you become a woman who can’t wear short shorts and bikini anymore, who might even cut her hair short, who must use face masks and eye cream all the time, who gets her first wrinkles, and who younger generation calls Mrs. ____ . And I don’t want this. Not because I want to be childish and don’t want to grow up, I just don’t want to get old I guess. People actually consider me mature for my age, but when I turn 30, maturity will be kind of expected. Let me know if you have similar feelings? At least then I won’t feel so lonely and silly.

Nevertheless, I want to spend this year purposefully so good that it won’t be so sad to turn 30. Here is my list of 29 things to do this year: Continue reading “29 Things To Do Before I Turn 30”

Under The Sea Sensory Box

DIY/How to, Family, Lifestyle

under-the-sea-sensory-box

We have recently discovered water beads and our life has changed forever :-). They are so much fun and there is an endless number of activities you can do with them. Today I decided to make an under the sea sensory box for my kids. My kids (almost 3 y.o. and 1 y.o) had a blast!!!

So what are the water beads? Water beads are tiny dehydrated crystal gels that are made from water-absorbing polymer. You put the beads in a bowl, add water, and once the beads start to absorb the water they begin to grow.

I got mine from Amazon, they came in a pack of 3: blue, transparent and blue, and green. I’m sure they will last a long time because you really don’t need a lot to create this sensory box.

water-beads

As you can see from the photo, I used maybe a little more than a tablespoon, and it was enough to fill a small box.

It usually takes 8 hours for them to expand to a full size, but we were too impatient to wait. So in about 30 minutes or so we drained the water and started to play. Even though they weren’t big they were still fun to play with. At the beginning, Christian wanted to eat them and I don’t blame him, just look at these water beads, they look like candy, who wouldn’t want to eat them?! 🙂

July Currently

Dallas, Texas, Family, Lifestyle

july-currently

July has been a lot of fun (pool parties, moms night out, going out with friends).  A big portion of the month we all have been under the weather though (Daniel and I had bad allergies, Christian had a stomach bug and ran a fever 104.2, David has just recently got sick and had a fever 103 yesterday). We are also preparing for David’s First Birthday Party, and while it’s a lot of fun, it’s also a bit stressful.

This month I was reminded of how fast time really flies (well, I’m reminded of it every month lol). I realized that I’m not looking forward to my birthdays anymore (which btw is next month!! Wait, what??), because I’m getting older, and I’m not looking forward to being a 50-year-old woman.. And I know it’s far away..but again, is it??  I’m like a little terrified of it lol…

Favorite: These Sunglasses! I love me some cat-eye frames, these particular sunglasses just scream SUMMER!! And they’re so cheap too <3
