Lonely Mom? (there is hope)

On September 21, 2011, I came to a new country, to a new city just after 2 months of losing my cousin whom I loved (and still do) so dearly, I flew 20 hours to Dallas heartbroken but excited to be reunited with my husband whom I didn’t see for 6 months. Of course, I was sad to leave my family and my friends behind, but I thought I’d be fine, I have a husband, who is my best friend, and I could talk with my family and friends over the phone, technology is so amazing after all… Well, I was so naive… We were doing good for 6 months, he was enough for me, being alone the whole day didn’t really bother me  (being an introvert definitely helped).. but then, everything started to get to me: being stuck in the apartment while Daniel was working, no car (in Texas it’s a problem), no job (my documents for green card were in the process), no friends, no family, no one really to talk to, and even though technology worked, time zones were still different…

It was always hard for me to make friends, I prefer quality over quantity, and I’m so blessed to have friends in different countries, people who I’ve been friends with for 10+ years, people who I care about and who care about me, and even though being in different time zones changed the way we communicate, it hasn’t changed the status of our friendship. But how do you make friends when you’re in a new city, when you don’t really go anywhere, when English is your second language, and you’re always self-conscious about your accent and pronunciation, and because of it you talk even less, plus, everyone has their own circle of people they hang out with?

I was kind of miserable but didn’t want to seem needy, I felt like I got it, that I could do everything on my own, and that I didn’t really need friends. Rule #1 Never underestimate the power of having a real girlfriend (even if it’s just one) by your side.

I was staying busy, blogging, learning new skills, got a puppy… still no friends, though. Then I got pregnant. Christian was born in October 2013, and when he was about 5 months old I realized that I really wanted him to have friends who he could grow up with, have play dates, birthday parties. I knew then that I had to make the first step to change the situation.. if not for me then for him.. I knew that when he goes to school, of course, he would have friends, but I didn’t want to wait till then and I also wanted to know the parents of his friends, not just on a first name basis, but to really know them, be friends with them. So I started to search different groups for moms around the city. The first group I went to was a group for nursing moms, and I met Marycarmen there, we talked briefly, and it wasn’t like we connected and hit it off right away, but I thought she was nice and our sons are practically the same age, so I asked for her phone number to meet up some time after. We didn’t return to that group again, but we became long-lasting friends. I never thought that something like this was possible, that you could go to a class full of unknown to you people just once, and find a friend :-). I’ve joined other groups as well, met a lot of moms, with the majority of women that I met I couldn’t connect, maybe because of cultural differences, maybe because they already had their group of friends and not necessarily wanted or needed a new friend, it doesn’t matter why, it’s life I can’t be friends with everyone, right? BUT to my surprise, there were also a lot of moms that were in a similar situation like mine who just wanted a friend for their child and a friend for themselves… When I saw that, I realized that I needed to make the first step not only for me and my child but for them too. I don’t want anyone to feel lost or lonely. That was one of the reasons I became a Mombassador for Dallas Moms Blog group in my area… I want to connect people and connect with people, I want to see new moms make friends, make real friends who they can share their life events with.

I’m blessed to have a group of girlfriends that I can spend time with, do monthly moms outings (because we all know moms need that), have playdates with kids, and attend family events.

Rule # 2 Don’t be afraid to make the first step, or say “hi” or ask for a phone number to connect, maybe a mom on a playground running around after her little threenager is your friend for life, maybe not, but if she is, don’t lose her and all the moments you can create together.

If you know me you know that I LOVE picnics! What can be better than sitting outside, eating good food, having a conversation with great friends while your kids are running around? Today my amazing friend and awesome blogger Roselle from in_DFW blog (which is the best guide to family fun) and I decided to team up and create a list of TEN parks in DFW that are perfect for a picnic. So here they are:

  1. Haggard Park

Located in the heart of Plano and is also a home of Interurban Railway museum. We especially like going there for movie nights in the park. They are free and family-friendly, you can’t beat it.

2. Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

It’s probably number 1 park for playdates for those who live in Plano area. It has everything: a playground for kids, several pavilions, hike and bike trails, plus it’s pet-friendly.

3. Hope park

The best family park hands down. Huge playground for kids different age, spray park, stocked pond, a walking trail, BBQ grill, picnic tables – pretty much everything you need for a fun family time outdoors. If you’ve never been there, you have to check it out!

4. Bob Woodruff Park

This park is located near the lake, great place for those who love fishing. It also features sand volleyball court, hike and bike trails, therapeutic swing and a playground.

Little Swimmers

Dallas, Texas, Family, Lifestyle

I’ve probably said it hundred times and I will say it again 🙂 One of the best decisions we’ve made was to send Christian to swim school (Emler Swim School) early. He was 15 months old, it was January, we didn’t have the pool at that time, but we felt that it was so important to learn how to swim, because it’s the skill that he will always have no matter the profession, no matter where he lives and what he does. I remember him crying for several weeks every swim lesson, and then one day he stopped and he started to really enjoy the process. I look at him now and I’m so happy to see him happy and excited to jump in the water. There is no fear or uncertainty in his eyes, he really loves it and truly enjoys his pool time.

April + May Favorite Moments

Dallas, Texas, Family, Lifestyle

favorite-moments

I’m always excited about this kind of posts because I can look back on the entire month and really appreciate everything we have and the time spent with family and friends.

I started this series of posts in March, but I skipped April because I was just so busy (still unpacking ugh)… that’s why today I’m combining April and May together in one post since we’ve had a lot of good moments in April and I want to share them with you.

Reminded of that we are responsible not only for our kids but we are responsible TO them for our choices, actions, and behavior. We should always be an example of what we want to teach them.

Reading a lot of health related articles. David was really sick past month for 2 weeks straight, he had a hand, foot & mouth disease, viral diarrhea (therefore really bad rash), allergies and ear infection. It was really tough on him. We were prescribed antibiotics and a lot of other medicines that I didn’t want to give him 🙁 so I started to read about natural approach to treating these kinds of medical conditions and I’m happy to report that it’s been successful 🙂

We’ve watched several movies this past couple of months, but first two movies that come to mind are Legend (based on true story) and The Nice Guys. Both are good!

Enjoying being a mommy. I enjoy daily cute conversations with Christian, I enjoy seeing how both of my kids develop and grow, I enjoy cooking for them (before it was a struggle because Christian was so picky and David wasn’t eating solids yet).

Wanting for David to sleep through the night… oh I want it so much LOL. I kinda used to get up at nights, and I pretty much forgot what it feels like to have uninterrupted nighttime sleep, but people say it’s good, so I want to experience it again LOL.

Listening to Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars, it’s Christian’s new favorite song 🙂

Highlights of this couple of months ↓ . Watch my April + May Favorite Moments 🙂 ↓

P.S. Finally caught up with my vlogs, so now they will be up in real time and not 2 months behind 🙂

Has anything exciting happened in your life recently? Please, share 🙂

1. Valentine’s Day and I’m 14 weeks pregnant.. Looking at this picture, I can’t wait for warm weather to finally be here, even though this winter is pretty warm, so I won’t complain too much! 🙂

Happy Birthday, Alesya!!! <3

So.. my girlfriend has a bday today…. She caught up with me haha..she turned 25… Now, we are the same age and she won’t be able to tease me anymore until my next bday 🙂

I really hate the fact that all 4 of us in 4 different countries 🙁 It makes me sad… It would be so much nicer and easier if we lived closer to each other… But hopefully, one day….

Anyways, I congratulate you with your birthday, my dear!!! And wish you all the best… and I hope we will see you somewhere on the beach this year… and my number 13 on the plan that I created will be accomplished 🙂
